To help keep you up-to-date on all things Salem Parks & Recreation, we have created a monthly newsletter. Listed below are some of the exciting things that will be going on in Salem this month!
Special Events
Salem After 5

Come listen to live music and dance the night away! Bring a chair and blanket while enjoying food from local food vendors at our Food Court, including Kettle Cooker Express, Salem Ice Cream Parlor and Rick's Wrap it Up. There are plenty of activities for children as well. Salem After 5 is sponsored by Pinnacle Bank, MedExpress, Budweiser, Pepsi and Q-99.

Date: Friday, August 10

Time: 5:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Location: Salem Farmers Market

Cost: $5 (children under the age of 12 are free)

Band: Fuzzy Logic

Salem Distance Run

Come run the 44th anniversary of the Salem Distance Run. Run begins on Main Street and finishes at Longwood Park. The Distance Run has races distances of 10K and 5K.  The 5K can also be walked.

Date: Saturday, August 11

Time: Start of the race is 8:00 a.m.

Location: The race beings on Main Street with awards at Longwood Park.

How to register:
1. Sign up  online
2. Mail the registration & payment - Registration Form
3. Sign up day of the race. 

**Packet pick up is Friday, August 10, 2018 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. If you have any questions, please call 540-444-2925.

The Salem Distance Run is sponsored by Health Focus of Southwest Virginia and Fleet Feet Sports.

Movies at Longwood

Bring a blanket and chairs and enjoy a movie under the stars! Admission is free and FunTimes will be there with a concession stand to sell snack items. 

The first 50 families will receive a free bag of popcorn from Frito Lay.

Special Events
Star B-Q
The 12th Annual Star-B-Q is Salem's very own country, BBQ concert. The event features barbecue restaurants around the valley while you listen to some of Country Music's top talent. This year's Star B-Q concert will feature headliners Maddie & Tae with opening act Crawford & Power!

Date: Wednesday, August 29th
Time: Gates open at 5:00 p.m.
Bands: Crawford & Power - 6:00 p.m.
Maddie & Tae - 7:30 p.m.
Location: Salem Farmers Market
Cost: $8 in advance/$12 day of
Children 10 and under are free
Tickets go on sale 8/6 at 8:00 a.m. and may be purchased online or at the Salem Parks and Recreation Main Office

Youth Sports
The goal of our athletics program is to provide an enjoyable experience for each youth participant, while developing character, sport related skills, sportsmanship and promoting good will among all teams and individuals.

Practices begin for all Fall Sports which include Cheerleading, Flag Football, Tackle Football, Girls Soccer and Boys Fall Soccer.
Senior Center
The Salem Senior Center is celebrating its 46th anniversary this year. One thing has never changed through the years at the Center...........all senior citizens are welcome and encouraged to participate. We offer something for every senior citizen. Stop by the office and we will be glad to show you around and make sure you have a monthly newsletter. Activities, travel, classes, and friendships are what makes the Center a welcoming place to come.

"Make Your Own Ice Cream Sundae Day" 
Date: Tuesday, August 21
Time: 2:00 p.m.
Price: $3.00
In honor of Senior Citizens Day come join us and make your own sundae with all the toppings. This day was created as a day to support, honor and show appreciation to our seniors and to recognize their achievements. Their valuable contributions to our communities create better places to live.

With John Hickey
Come join John for an Ice Cream Social and learn about this new home phone technology that you may be able to get for free.

"Stretch Your Grocery Dollars"
 With Billie Hudson from Humana
Come joint Billie for this informational talk to help us with better grocery shopping ideas. Billie will bring snacks to share.

Appomatox Courthouse/American Civil War Museum
Date: Friday, August 24th
Location: Appomatox, Va
Time: Departs from Salem Civic Center at 8 a.m.
Cost: $20.00
Details: Venture back in time to the Civil War Days as we visit the Historical site where Lee surrendered to Grant and also visit the American Civil War Museum. Lunch will be on your own at Granny Bee’s. Cost includes transportation and entrance to Civil War Museum.

Summer Camps

The Salem Parks & Recreation department has provided summer camps for the youth in the City of Salem for over 20 years, giving kids the opportunity to experience the fun of various activities throughout the summer. Each sports camp is taught by Salem High School Head Coaches, some of the premier head coaches in the Roanoke Valley.

At only $10 per camper (unless noted otherwise), the City of Salem offers some of the most affordable summer camps around unless. Camps are for rising 2nd-9th graders unless otherwise noted.

We will have four camps remaining this summer including:

Girls Lacrosse: July 30 - August 2
Computer Coding 2: July 30 - August 2
Golf: August 6 - 9
Tennis 2: August 6 - 9
